Who is the Affinity Volunteer?

Volunteers are a critical part of the hospice team which recognizes that dying is not just a medical event but a personal one as well. Many volunteers report that helping terminally ill patients is more about living fully than dying.

There are many opportunities for volunteering with Affinity and there are no age restrictions. The only requirement is that volunteer candidates complete the Hospice Volunteer Training Program, which is offered free of charge. Information regarding the periodic volunteer training opportunities can be found by clicking the link below or calling your local Affinity office.

Hospice volunteers have a wide range of activities that are patient-specific and can include things such as: visiting or having a silent presence, writing letters, taking walks, reading, supervising visits with pets (pet therapy), support for primary caregivers, grocery shopping, or light housekeeping. Being a volunteer does not mean that direct patient care is required. People are unique and sometimes their skills are more suited to administrative or office work; so volunteering in the office is an option as well.

Volunteering is a gift that very special people give to those suffering with terminal illnesses. We look forward to working with you.

Hospice Volunteer "Thank You"
By Linda Cross, Chaplain

Of the many things we do in life,
One soars above the rest,
Yielding fruit of blessing,
Love, which is the best.

As eyes of need fall upon you,
Assessment of value is clear.
For in their hour of lack,
You have come near.

Your heart is tried, purified like gold,
And diamonds in the sun.
Volunteering is rewarding,
But not for everyone.

You’ve committed love and time.
Touching hearts in ways you do not know,
Sowing seeds of kindness,
Everywhere you go.

Thank you for giving of yourself,
Reaching out a listening ear.
Hospice families thank you,
And we hold you dear.
